Deaf Friendly Swimming
The National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) is the leading charity dedicated to creating a world without barriers for deaf people and young children. The NDCS state very clearly that the key to unlocking a child child's potential is the family unit.
Many families struggle to communicate effectively with their deaf child and deaf children develop language at a slower rate than their hearing peers. Given the right no support there is no reason for this.
The Me2 project is working across the UK to help swimming clubs, coaches, instructors and leisure staff to be inclusive of the needs of deaf children and young people!
In development of resources for the Deaf friendly swimming campaign Cath Smith (Leading British Sign Language Author) kindly illustrated over 50 signs to be used on waterproof flashcards. These signs are available to learning at home and can be downloaded from Google Play (for use on Android devices) or the Kindle Store.
If you are a swimming coach, club, pool or school you will need to sign up to the Deaf-friendly pledge in order to gain access to NDCS support and resources. Parents and other professionals are able to request the resource pack directly from the Me2 team.
There are lots of benefits to signing up! For further information on NDCS and the Me2 project visit: http://www.ndcs.org.uk/whats_on/me2/deaffriendly_youth_organisations/deaf_friendly.html
