Growing up with dyslexia was not always an easy road and sometimes it was just plain lonely. As an adult I have experienced many successes even as being dyslexic still presents challenges in my ability to communicate every day.  When my niece was born with Down Syndrome I knew immediately that I wanted to channel my energy and focus into helping special needs children, their families, and community members and thus, BLS For Kids came to life.

Vision

At BSL For Kids, we envision a community where parents, caregivers, teachers, extended family and friends of special needs children all understand, engage in, and perpetuate the medium our children use to communicate so they can be truly integrated and included in their community at large.

Mission

To reach our vision we strive to enhance learning and human expression through the use of sign and symbol-based products. We do this by:

·       Creating affordable, effective and fun products that can be easily used by adults and children alike,

·       Partnering with others who share our vision such as Cath Smith and Widgit Software, and

·       Providing and producing products which are approved by DEAFSIGN, publishers of the Let’s Sign BSL educational materials. ¹

Values

We believe:

·       The ability to communicate is one of humankind’s most basic survival tools,

·       Special needs children can communicate more effectively if members of their community are adept at using the same mode of communication they are – namely sign and symbol-based, and

·       That the ability to effectively communicate in one’s community directly impacts the ability to integrate and be included in that community.

Therefore, the decisions we make at BSL For Kids will be made in the light of our values, to further our mission and in support of our vision.
